The mental model theory is an approach with clear psychological, linguistic, and cognitive consequences. This paper delves into some of the epistemological conclusions that can be drawn from it. In particular, it addresses the process why knowledge acquisition can modify the inferences people tend to make. That process is described by means of an example based on a well-known logical schema related to the conditional: Modus Tollendo Tollens.

A letter in Ionian Greek, engraved on a baked clay tablet, which probably to the middle of the 5th century BC (likely a little earlier than 450), was found at Thasos. It was published by Natacha Trippé, and later again by Madalina Dana, as a private letter. As the text is very incompletely preserved, its interpretation is difficult. This paper offers a new possible reading and interpretation. According to his new hypothesis, the text would be an official letter through which (...) a magistrate of the polis Thasos, a certain Euarchos, orders Echiōn, son of Artymokleēs, to celebrate the next festival of Zeus Patrōios and justifies his order (unfortunately the part of the letter containing the justification is lost). If this reading is correct, the letter is proof of the existence of a civic cult of Zeus Patrōios at Thasos. Additionally, it explains why the clay tablet was baked: the official character of the letter demanded that it be preserved permanently and unalterably. We already knew from inscriptions engraved on boundary-stones found in, or (in one case) coming from, the Thesmophorion of Thasos that some of the Thasian patrai worshipped Zeus Patrōios, i.e. “Zeus of the family”, as their god. It therefore appears that the civic community of Thasos as a whole celebrated a festival in honor of this god. The community likely saw him as the father of the great family that was the polis. This paper argues that the Thasian patrai were subsections of the phylai. The existence of the latter is shown by an inscription naming the Geleontes. (shrink)

In the text we approach the trajectory of the Peruvian thinker Aníbal Quijano and how he came to the formulation by which he is known, the explanatory pair modernity / coloniality. We propose a problematizing reading of his intellectual itinerary, recovering a recurrent and highly suggestive metaphor in his approach, the explanatory allegory of the knot. We consider that this figure has multiple potentialities, both in the epistemic-philosophical and political-cultural dimension.

Call ‘a substance’ a person who is at home in a relatively stable and unified sense-making framework: a social structure that to some degree specifies which categories are important for interpreting reality, which goals are worth pursing, which character traits are admirable, etc. Call ‘an accident’ a person who is not at home in one such framework. It is tempting to think that being a substance is preferable, but I present some considerations for thinking otherwise. Mexican philosophers Emilio Uranga and (...) Jorge Portilla, I argue, present notions of accidentality as decolonial tools. Uranga’s account enables Mexicans to have positive valuation of their being independently of the approving gaze of the colonizers and their standards of value. Portilla’s thought distinguishes between pernicious accidentality resulting from the disintegration of sense-making frameworks and authentic accidentality as a condition for freedom, self-creation, and ultimately for individual and communal liberation. The articles in this volume offer a fresh perspective on the important role of the concept of law (lex) in the moral and political philosophy of the 'School of Salamanca'.

Background: In the last decades, there have been important developments in the scientific and technological areas of healthcare. On certain occasions this provokes conflict between the patients' rights and the values of healthcare professionals which brings about, within this clinical relationship, the problem of conscientious objection. Aims: To learn the opinions that the Nurses of the Madrid Autonomous Community have regarding conscientious objection. Research design: Cross-cutting descriptive study. Participants and research context: The nurses of 9 hospitals and 12 Health Centers (...) in the Madrid Autonomous Community. The study was done by means of an auto completed anonymous questionnaire. The variables studied were social-demographical and their opinions about conscientious objections. Ethical considerations: The study was approved by the Ethical Community of Clinical Research of the University Hospital Príncipe de Asturias. Participants were assured of maximum confidentiality and anonymity. Findings: A total of 421 nurses answered the questionnaire. In total, 55.6% of the nurses confirmed they were religious believers, and 64.3% declared having poor knowledge regarding conscientious objection. The matters that caused the greatest objections were voluntary abortions, genetic embryo selection, refusal of blood transfusions, and therapy refusal. Discussion: Different authors state that the most significant cases of conscientious objections for health professionals are those regarding carrying out or assisting in abortions, euthanasia, the practice of assisted reproduction and, finally, the prescription and dispensing of the morning-after pill. In our study, the most significant cases in which the nurses would declare conscientious objections would be the refusal to accept treatment, the selection of embryos after genetic diagnosis preimplantation, the patient’s refusal to receive blood transfusions due to religious reasons and pregnant women’s request for voluntary abortions within the first 14 weeks. Conclusion: Nurses’ religious beliefs influence their opinions regarding conscientious objection. The nurses who declare themselves as religious believers object in a higher percentage than those without religious beliefs. (shrink)

From the thought of mid-twentieth century Mexican philosopher Jorge Portilla, I develop an account of what I call ‘ethics of ethnic identity,’ which include: a) a set of norms of agency grounded in ethnic identity, or ethnic norms of agency—reasons for action and obligations that spring from a given ethnic identity, and b) a type of normativity governing these ethnic norms of agency. I argue that one of the theoretical advantages of this account is that it fares well with respect (...) to human flourishing, moral obligations, and freedom and autonomy. I also develop an account of ethics of ethnic identity from Christine Korsgaard’s account of the sources of normativity and use it as a sophisticated foil against which my elaborations of Portilla’s views can be fruitfully contrasted. Background:Nurses and nursing students increasingly confront ethical problems in clinical practice. Moral sensitivity, moral reasoning, and ethical decision-making are therefore important skills throughout the nursing profession. Innovative teaching methods as part of the ethics training of nursing students help them acquire these fundamental skills.Aim:This study investigated the effects and potential benefits of using standardized patients in ethics education on nursing baccalaureate students’ moral sensitivity, moral reasoning, and ethical decision-making by comparing this method with in-class case analyses.Research design:This is a quasi-experimental (...) study.Participants and research context:The sample comprised 89 students in Hacettepe University’s Faculty of Nursing. Following lectures describing the theoretical components of ethics, students were randomly assigned to two working groups, one using standardized patients and the other using in-class case analyses. Data were collected using the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire, Rest’s Defining Issues Test, and the Nursing Dilemma Test. All data were analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics Version 23.Ethical considerations:Ethical approval and official permission were obtained. All participating students completed informed consent forms.Findings:According to the results, the moral sensitivity of students in the standardized patient group significantly improved over time compared to those in the case analysis group, while the mean scores of students in both groups for moral reasoning and ethical decision-making were not statistically significant.Conclusion:Based on our results, we recommend the use of both standardized patients and case analysis as appropriate teaching methods in ethics education. The former is a natural capacity that humans share with other animals; the latter is an acquired skill that only humans can master. The craft of mirror-gazing,despite its relevance to daily life is barely understood. An Anthropological Guide to the Art and Philosophy of Mirror Gazing provides a metaphysical manual to understand it. The book is (...) written from a cross-disciplinary and object-based perspective. The role of the mirror as a technology of self-objectification is explored through various case studies of cultures such as the Buryats of Eastern Mongolia. By using various anthropological examples, Koukouti and Malafouris survey and reflect on the structures and experiences of consciousness that underpin the specular image and the different meanings of the self. By combining metaphor, comparison and estrangement - where what was thought of as natural is seen as deliberately caused and altered - this book weaves together ethnographic description and philosophical analysis with empirical examples and experimental studies that allow the reader to think about the world and their subjectivity a bit differently. Social work and bioethics are fields deeply committed to cross-disciplinary collaboration to do their respective work. While scholars and practitioners from both fields share a commitment to social justice and to respecting the dignity, integrity and the worth of all persons, the overlap between the fields, including shared values, has received little attention. The purpose of this article is to describe the ways in which greater collaboration between the two fields can broaden their scope, enrich their scholarship, and better ground (...) their practice. We describe the potential for realizing such benefits in two areas – health care ethics consultation and social inequalities in health – arguing that the fields both complement and challenge one another, making them ideal partners for the interdisciplinary inquiry and problem-solving so often called for today in health and health care. ABSTRACT William Wordsworth's poetry was a thinking poetry, according to many of his contemporaries. Whether it was due to the edifying nature of his poetry, his refreshing approach to everyday things, or his philosophical thought, Wordsworth's poetry was always considered as a notable effort to elevate the poem to ontological category. In this context, imagination acquires great importance. The article analyzes the sense in which imagination is the ontological center of Wordsworth's poetry. Cy Twombly est un artiste très secret. De son vivant, il ne laissait personne entrer dans son atelier pendant qu’il peignait et seulement quelques photographes ont pu en franchir le seuil. C’est l’artiste lui-même qui offre le meilleur accès à son univers dans ses ateliers de New York, Rome, Bassano in Taverina ou Gaeta et dans sa ville natale de Lexington : une publication récente, Cy Twombly : Homes & Studios (Nicola Del Roscio, Schirmer/Mosel, 2019), nous permet d’avoir un aperçu (...) de ses lieux de travail par des clichés choisis avec soin par l’artiste. Face à ces photographies de Twombly, une question se pose : quel usage fait Twombly de la photographie d’atelier? Dans cet article, nous allons explorer ce thème à travers l’étude approfondie de ces prises de vue, et analyser trois approches et regards différents de l’artiste sur son espace créatif : les vues d’ensemble, les natures mortes et les détails. The current assessment of behaviors in the inventories to diagnose autism spectrum disorders (ASD) focus on observation and discrete categorizations. Behaviors require movements, yet measurements of physical movements are seldom included. Their inclusion however, could provide an objective characterization of behavior to help unveil interactions between the peripheral and the central nervous systems. Such interactions are critical for the development and maintenance of spontaneous autonomy, self-regulation and voluntary control. At present, current approaches cannot deal with the heterogeneous, dynamic and stochastic (...) nature of development. Accordingly, they leave no avenues for real-time or longitudinal assessments of change in a coping system continuously adapting and developing compensatory mechanisms. We offer a new unifying statistical framework to reveal re-afferent kinesthetic features of the individual with ASD. The new methodology is based on the non-stationary stochastic patterns of minute fluctuations (micro-movements) inherent to our natural actions. Such patterns of behavioral variability provide re-entrant sensory feedback contributing to the autonomous regulation and coordination of the motor output. From an early age, this feedback supports centrally driven volitional control and fluid, flexible transitions between intentional and spontaneous behaviors. We show that in ASD there is a disruption in the maturation of this form of proprioception. Despite this disturbance, each individual has unique adaptive compensatory capabilities that we can unveil and exploit to evoke faster and more accurate decisions. Measuring the kinesthetic re-afference in tandem with stimuli variations we can detect changes in their micro-movements indicative of a more predictive and reliable kinesthetic percept. Our methods address the heterogeneity of ASD with a personalized approach grounded in the inherent sensory-motor abilities that the individual has already developed. (shrink)

Conflicts of interest. None to report Healthcare is a context where individuals with disability confront important ethical and social challenges. Adolescents and young adults with cerebral palsy (CP) seem to face additional challenges but we have little insight into their perspectives. This qualitative study aimed to identify and better understand such challenges. We interviewed 14 participants with CP aged 18 to 25. Participants described a range of challenges experienced when using health services, including: lack of long-term follow-up, shortcomings in physical (...) access to infrastructures, and situations of injustice. Challenges specific to medical consultations were reported (e.g., rude attitudes, belittlement, inadequate communication, lack of consideration). We discuss and explain further that: (1) the ethical principle of respect for persons needs to be concretely specified to improve current practices; (2) respect for autonomy calls for further direct empowerment of individuals with CP and, (3) gaps in dedicated healthcare resources for CP and the long-term needs associated should be addressed. This paper examines and analyzes five definitions of ‘existential risk.’ It tentatively adopts a pluralistic approach according to which the definition that scholars employ should depend upon the particular context of use. More specifically, the notion that existential risks are ‘risks of human extinction or civilizational collapse’ is best when communicating with the public, whereas equating existential risks with a ‘significant loss of expected value’ may be the most effective definition for establishing existential risk studies as a legitimate field of (...) scientific and philosophical inquiry. In making these arguments, the present paper hopes to provide a modicum of clarity to foundational issues relating to the central concept of arguably the most important discussion of our times. Recent research on consumer social responsibility highlights the need to examine psychological drivers of environmentally‐friendly consumption choices in a global context. This article investigates consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) more for environmentally‐friendly products across 28 European Union (EU) countries, using a sample of 21,514 consumers. A multigroup structural equation modeling analysis reveals significantly different patterns and relationships, in how (a) subjective knowledge about the product's environmental impact, (b) environmental product attitudes, and (c) the perceived importance of the products’ environmental impact (...) influence consumers’ WTP more for environmentally‐friendly products across countries. The hypothesized model predicts WTP for 20 out of 28 countries and the findings show that a “one‐size‐fits‐all” approach is inadequate in capturing the heterogeneity of EU consumers. Hosfstede's cultural dimensions of uncertainty tolerance and individualism explain differences in WTP for environmentally‐friendly products across EU countries. In this paper, I critique two conceptions of mechanisms, namely those put forth by Stuart Glennan (Erkenntnis 44:49–71, 1996; Philosophy of Science 69:S342–S353, 2002) and Machamer et al. (Philosophy of Science 67:1–25, 2000). Glennan’s conception, I argue, cannot account for mechanisms involving negative causation because of its interactionist posture. MDC’s view encounters the same problem due to its reificatory conception of activities—this conception, I argue, entails an onerous commitment to ontological dualism. In the place of Glennan and MDC, I propose (...) a “modified conception” of mechanisms, which (a) obviates the problem of negative causation by reinterpreting MDC’s activities according to a “descriptivist” account, and (b) avoids MDC’s problem by postulating a monistic ontology of entities. Thus, by solving these problems, my modified conception offers a cogent, more adequate alternative to Glennan’s and MDC’s conceptions of mechanisms. (shrink)

This paper offers a renewed construction grammar analysis of linguistic constructions in a diachronic perspective. The present theory, termedAgentive Cognitive Construction Grammar(AgCCxG), is informed byactive inference(AIF), a process theory for the comprehension of intelligent agency. AgCCxG defends the idea that language bear traces of non-linguistic, bodily-acquired information that reflects sémiotico-biological processes of energy exchange and conservation. One of the major claims of the paper is that embodied cognition has evolved to facilitate ontogenic mental alignment among humans. This is demonstrated by (...) the results of a corpus study in which the patterns of association between verbs, the particle UP and argument structure in Old and Middle English have been studied. The conclusion is that, similar to biological systems, the linguistic sign system displays patterns of equilibrium and non-equilibrium. In other words, while in Old English usage near equilibrium was reached through the use of a conservative set of constructional semiotic templates (attachment patterns), associated with motor modalities, Middle English displays high rates of randomness resulting in a less stable, yet distinct, system of constructional attachment. Astrobiocentrism is a vision that places us in a scenario of confirmation of life in the universe, either as a second genesis or as an expansion of humanity in space. It manages to raise consistent arguments in relation to questions such as what would happen to knowledge if life were confirmed in the universe, how would this change the way we understand our place in the cosmos? Astrobiocentrism raises a series of reflections in the context of confirmed discovery, and it (...) develops concepts that work directly with what would happen after irrefutable evidence has been obtained that we are not alone in space. Unlike biocentrism or ecocentrism, the astrobiocentric view is not limited to the Earth-centric perspective, and for it incorporates a multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary understanding. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to make a reflection on the astrobiocentric issues related to the challenges and problems of the discovery of life in the universe and the expansion of mankind into space. Here we explore some aspects of the transition from biogeocentrism to astrobiocentrism, astrobiosemiotics, homo mensura, moral community, planetary sustainability and astrotheology. (shrink)

In his new book, Carlos Alberto Torres, an internationally renowned critical theorist of education, explores the early writings of Paulo Freire whose ideas have had a tremendous and long-lasting impact on the world of pedagogy and politics. Torres analyzes Freire's works, from the 1960s and 1970s, before Freire gained worldwide recognition for his Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Offering an in-depth look into the formative thinking of Freire, Torres identifies how his ideas produced frameworks for educating global citizens, (...) building community and mutual respect, creating social responsibility, instilling an appreciation for diversity, promoting multiple literacies, and social justice education. One important limitation of the current renditions of interpretivism is that its emphasis on the moral dimension of sport has overlooked the aesthetic dimension lying at the core of this account of sport. The interpretivist’s failure to acknowledge and consider the aesthetic implicitly distances this realm from the moral. Marcia Muelder Eaton calls this distancing the separatist mistake. This paper argues that interpretivism presupposes not only moral but also aesthetic principles and values. What it sets out to demonstrate is that (...) interpretivism is an integralist, or nonseparatist, account of sport, one in which ethical and aesthetic values are not exclusive. Making explicit and specifying interpretivism’s combined moral-aesthetic approach to sport not only helps to better distinguish the whole range of values that make up sport as well as their interconnection but also encourages sportspeople to pursue more coherent sport and, thus, more enriching lives. The article aims to base the presence of a reconceptualization of the political in Michel Foucault's thought, taking as the reading key ethhopolitics as a conceptual proposal. There, we can find a concept completely opposed to the way in which both modern governmentality and the tradition of political thought have understood the meaning of politics in the West. Following this purpose, the hypothesis is proposed and developed, according to which the analytical gesture that persists in Michel Foucault's thought is a (...) concept of the political that affirms life in its radical exuberance and unfoundedness. In this statement, we recognize the signatures of a triangular conceptual structure made up of the fold between life, ethics and power. After exposing the problem and clearing some methodological difficulties for its approach, we examine in detail the investigations that comprise the archeology of ethical life in the French philosopher. It is argued that the very textuality of ethhopolitics is formulated as politicity rather than as a specific policy, that is, it is presented as a politics of life, since it is implied as a singular modulation of existence. The article concludes with a scriptural threshold composed of five theses that attempt to expand and project the philosophical-political returns of the analysis developed towards a research program. Si se comprende lo que hacen las humanidades respecto a los lenguajes humanos, se comprende mejor su papel y su importancia en la educación, la forma en que facilitan el diálogo entre disciplinas y entre visiones de mundo, la forma en que empoderan a los individuos y las sociedades para articular nuevas formas de desocultar nuevas respuestas a la antiquísima pregunta filosófica: “¿cómo se debe vivir?”. In 1903, W. E. B. Du Bois addressed the question "How does it feel to be a social problem?". In 2008, Moustafa Bayoumi answered the same question for Muslims in the United States. Both Du Bois and Bayoumi provide powerful critiques against any notion that racialized minorities are inherently problematic. Both men generally argue that one cannot blame racialized minorities for the ill treatment they endure under systematic oppression. Du Bois and Bayoumi are two of many voices fighting against the (...) popular stigmatization of racialized peoples that include public intellectuals, civil rights activists, politicians, community leaders, educators, and many others. El presente Diccionario General de Pedagogía y Anexos Legislativos Españoles tiene la doble pretensión de servir a la comunidad docente en concreto, y al público en general, y de convertirse en un instrumento de consulta estudiantil. Su atención a elementos estables del discurso y del despliegue institucional educativo así como a las últimas transformaciones derivadas del proceso de convergencia europea así lo ponen de manifiesto. Estructurada en dos partes netamente complementarias como son el conjunto de las entradas y los fragmentos (...) legislativos de orden educativo, la obra intenta dotar al lector de los conocimientos precisos y esenciales que requiere hoy una buena formación en el ámbito que nos ocupa, y que es el la Pedagogía en concreto y el de la educación en general. Así, la concisión en las definiciones y caracterizaciones tanto como la exposición de los elementos que sirven de sustentación jurídica del discurso educativo forman una unidad coherente y completa. Si bien no todos los términos que configuran el presente Diccionario General de Pedagogía tienen su origen en el ámbito pedagógico, todos convergen en éste. Así, las entradas procedentes de las teorías pedagógicas conviven con otras provenientes de la psicología, las nuevas tecnologías y de la política y legislación educativas. Ello se justifica si se atiende a las finalidades últimas del sistema educativo y de la educación en general, que señala objetivos al servicio de los cuales se ordenan medios de procedencia diversa pero útiles por su instrumentalización pedagógica. El problema del acceso al conocimiento suele inscribirse en los estrechos márgenes de lo metodológico. Sin embargo, dicha cuestión excede los límites de la pura practicidad y eficiencia. La posibilidad de saber exige una indagación que trascienda la pura epidermis del supuesto de un cúmulo de conocimientos dados y al alcance de todos. Dicha posibilidad es mucho más que la distancia que media entre el sujeto dispuesto a conocer y los contenidos a asimilar. El acceso al saber implica, además, una (...) mirada a la realidad sin la cual el contenido asimilable se desnaturaliza como nutriente espiritual. Por consiguiente, resulta pertinente indagar qué miradas de la realidad son las que sirven de sustento a la diversidad de los concretos accesos a los múltiples saberes. Tal es el núcleo vertebrador que recorre esta obra. Fundamentos, contextos y metodologías de la educación resulta así un subtítulo que pretende especificar el objeto de estudio de El acceso al conocimiento. Se trata tanto de una exposición objetiva como de una dilucidación comprometida, dirigidas ambas al corazón de los procesos formativos vigentes. Cada uno de los veintidós capítulos que componen El acceso al conocimiento ha sido expuesto por separado y públicamente en el seno de diversos Congresos Internacionales. Por tanto, cada uno de ellos ha sido sometido a debate en sesiones congresuales que abarcan seis años: desde el 2000 hasta el 2006. La compilación que aquí se presenta –y en la que se han mantenido las diversas modalidades de cita bibliográfica- tiene, pues, el valor añadido de intentar propiciar nuevos diálogos y renovadas reflexiones. Elementos de Teoría de la Educación se presenta como una obra de síntesis de aquellos aspectos que, dentro del ámbito de la Teoría de la Educación, resultan fundamentales para los estudiantes universitarios preocupados por la educación en todas sus vertientes. Destinada, pues, a prestar un servicio teórico en cuanto a la exposición y clarificación de posiciones filosóficas y pedagógicas perennes -sin dejar por ello de realizar incursiones tanto históricas como culturales-, se estructura de tal modo que puede servir también como (...) guía orientativa y facilitadora que aliente posteriores desarrollos. Estructurada en dos partes bien diferenciadas -Problematizaciones: exigencias y finalidades pedagógicas y, en segundo lugar, Esquemas temáticos-, la presente obra cuenta con la ventaja de introducir en la primera de ellas cuestiones globales que, en la segunda, son retomadas en núcleos temáticos, esto es, con una inserción concreta y muy determinada. Con ello se pretende no sólo guiar al alumno a través de la temática teórico-educativa sino, también, incentivar la lectura activa. Sólo resta desear que los contenidos y la estructuración que aquí se ofrecen respondan tanto a los importantes anhelos de los estudiantes de Educación como a las considerables necesidades formativas que la sociedad les demanda. Pasado y presente se encuentran en las páginas de esta obra. Ahora bien, ello no pretende incurrir en ningún tipo de cronolatría. Por ello mismo, alberga la pretensión de mirar al futuro y proporcionar claves interpretativas para analizar y afrontar lo que está por venir. Tanto la Historia de la Educación como la Teoría de la Educación, por separado así como de manera interactiva, investigan, describen, analizan e interpretan lo que aconteció y lo que acaece con la finalidad de preparar (...) los andamios que permitan desentrañar retos latentes y afrontar nuevos desafíos. Por ello mismo, ninguna de las dos disciplinas se mueve por lo novedoso ni hacia lo más reciente, sino por aquello que discurre destilando permanencia. No hacerlo supondría atender sólo a lo último de la actualidad, lo cual conduciría a tales disciplinas a acabar trabajando para verter simples crónicas históricas o emitir meras informaciones tan profundamente superficiales como fugaces. Por tanto, una historia con voz propia y una teoría que pivota sobre el mejoramiento de procesos y de personas son los dos ejes que van a servir para enhebrar los contenidos del presente libro. Todo lo que compete al ámbito familiar es fundamental para una correcta vertebración social. Debido a ello, es preciso abordar integral e integradoramente los diferentes aspectos de la política familiar; así, desde los fundamentos de la protección familiar y su importancia dentro del conjunto de instrumentos de políticas de articulación social hasta las claves demográficas que explican y condicionan el futuro de España en el campo de la educación, del empleo, de la seguridad social y del diálogo social, merecen un (...) tratamiento adecuado y especializado. La protección social de la familia es, en la actualidad, no sólo oportuna sino también necesaria. Y ello por varias razones: en primer lugar, por su relevancia social e instrumental -la familia es fuente de solidaridad frente a las crisis económicas y crisis de valores-; en segundo lugar, por la alta valoración de ella que revelan todas las encuestas –lo que se interpreta como satisfacción por su concreto funcionamiento interno y como célula que fundamenta nuestro sistema social-; en tercer lugar, por la necesidad del reconocimiento social de la maternidad como garantía de futuro –pues de la maternidad no debieran derivarse efectos negativos para la vida personal de la mujer (ni en calidad, ni en oportunidades), lo que lleva a la necesidad de compatibilizar la esfera laboral y familiar-. Y, por último, por la necesidad de compensación pública de las cargas familiares. Además, no debe obviarse el hecho de que todo ello va asociado a los fuertes cambios que afectan a la familia como la aparición de nuevos problemas que van erosionando la institución familiar. Tales son, entre otros, la feminización de la pobreza, la aparición de familias reconstituidas, el rápido crecimiento del número de hogares de personas solas, el fuerte incremento cuantitativo de familias monoparentales, el aumento de divorcios, la caída de la natalidad y el envejecimiento de la población. Todo ello justifica el empeño investigador y preservador de la familia. En esta línea heurística y axiológica, el objetivo de este libro es ofrecer un panorama completo de los principales aspectos que hoy son considerados más relevantes en el ámbito de la protección de la familia teniendo como meta el que los análisis sectoriales confluyan de forma integradora hacia la consideración de la familia como unidad integral con entidad propia. La presente obra culmina un análisis pedagógico ajustado a lo que su propia naturaleza le exige, y que no es otra cosa que rigor, coherencia, adaptabilidad y altura de miras. De la misma manera que las cicatrices personales, siendo un indicativo de la existencia que hemos sobrellevado, no deciden nuestro destino, los contextos pueden condicionar concepciones, ideas, perspectivas, creencias y anhelos, pero nunca los determinan unívocamente. La finalidad de la educación ha de ser elevar, no complacer, armonizando lo firme y (...) lo cambiante en la persecución de sus objetivos. Resta decir que un estudiante universitario no es un ser hueco a la espera de resultar configurado desde el exterior; tampoco es alguien al que deba obligársele al conocimiento de los hechos y al desconocimiento de lo que acontece o pasa en la realidad. Y, más concretamente, un estudiante de Teoría de la Educación -en cuanto que Teoría del Conocimiento Pedagógico en su sentido más amplio- no debe quedar ensombrecido por la presentación de una interminable variedad de lo mismo. Éste es el desafío al que debemos enfrentarnos constantemente como docentes. (shrink)

El territorio de la educación resulta inestable. Adentrarse especulativamente en él requiere perspectivas desde las que otear el horizonte. Sin embargo, pronto se toma conciencia de que tanto dicho confín como tales miradores se presentan nebulosos. No sólo resulta problemático dar una definición de educación; también lo es el articular los medios conducentes a las finalidades educacionales propuestas. A pesar de ello, se procede a educar incesantemente, lo que prueba la necesidad del acto educativo y, por tanto, la de su (...) dilucidación. Tanto el esfuerzo por tratar de comprender los cambios presentes como el empeño por descifrar las implicaciones éticas e ideológicas que encierra cada propuesta de intervención educativa resultan insoslayables. Sin embargo, hay que decir que ni tal esfuerzo ni tal empeño pueden llegar a vaticinar cómo llegará alguien a amar el aprendizaje ni tampoco de qué forma se aprende a amar el conocimiento o el trabajo bien realizado. ¿Cuál es el procedimiento? ¿Cuál ha de ser el trazado? La diversidad de respuestas a estas cuestiones nos muestra que la persona del educando alberga siempre la posibilidad de sorprendernos. (shrink)

Resumen: El siguiente artículo parte reconociendo el carácter protector de la téchne y sus momentos constitutivos. De acuerdo a esta determinación es posible advertir el límite de la téchne a partir de la cuestión socrática de la virtud. La virtud, en la medida que no es un asunto análogo a los objetos de la téchne, precisa de un especial acceso. Desde la constatación del diálogo como el único modo de conocer la virtud, se pone de relieve su sentido comunitario y (...) el carácter del examen socrático. En el diálogo socrático se anuncia, así, que la virtud no es nunca algo técnicamente clausurado ni epistémicamente conceptualizado, sino el mayor bien humano que se cumple en su aproximación a través del examen conjunto de la propia vida.: This article starts by recognizing the protective nature of téchne and its development. It is thereby possible to understand the limits of téchne based on the Socratic question of virtue. Virtue, insofar as it is not a matter analogous to the objects of téchne, requires a special access. The communitarian sense and the character of the Socratic inquiry are made plain, given dialogue as the only way of knowing virtue. Socratic dialogue discloses that virtue is never technically closed or epistemically conceptualized, but that this greatest human good is fulfilled through the joint examination of life itself. Aunque el contenido del Eutifrón se revela en saber qué es la piedad, este diálogo, pese a una inevitable apariencia, no tiene como fin último proporcionar una definición proposicional de este fenómeno. La piedad se pone al descubierto a partir de la dialéctica de Sócrates, cuya insistencia en volver al principio del problema no proviene de una incapacidad del interlocutor de definir el asunto, sino de la debilidad misma del discurso. La necesidad de plantear otra vez desde el principio la (...) cuestión suscita en el intérprete advertir la importancia de la ejecución misma del diálogo como testimonio y acreditación de su propio contenido. De acuerdo a esta ejecución se podrá comprender en qué medida el sentido de la piedad se encuentra en relación al carácter principiante de Sócrates. (shrink)
